This Photo of a Skeleton in a Car Seat Is the Most Important Safety Lesson You Can Get

14:44 0 Comments

Sometimes knowing what you are supposed to do isn't as effective as knowing why you should be doing it.

Any parent who's ever bought a car seat has likely read in their instruction manual about the proper placement of the chest clip – which should be situated at armpit level – but still, countless injuries and deaths have resulted from children not being correctly secured at the time of an accident.

That's where Mr. Bones comes in. In just two simple Facebook images, the skeleton – created by child passenger safety advocate Ashley Kulm – models the correct and incorrect way to position the chest clip. What makes this visual so much more eye-opening than one with an actual child is that you can literally see what the chest clip is doing.

In the event of an accident, if the clip was placed in the wrong position, shown on the left, Mr. Bones would likely have internal bleeding to his vital organs. In the correct position, shown on the right, his organs are protected from impact by his rib cage. Kulm also notes that the chest clip, when placed too high – at the shoulder level, for instance – can cause asphyxiation.

Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Bones!

The First Trailer For Sully: Miracle on the Hudson Will Make You Never Want to Fly Again

14:39 0 Comments

The first trailer for Sully is here, and it looks incredibly haunting. Based on a true story, Tom Hanks portrays Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III, the man who safely landed a disabled plane on the Hudson River back in 2009, saving all 155 passengers and crew members on board. While he may have been regarded as a hero, the film shows that his life after the incident actually involved a lot of turmoil and self-doubt. Not only does Hanks deliver an incredible performance, but the film is also headed by award-winning director Clint Eastwood. Honestly, it already looks like a top contender for next year's Oscars. The movie doesn't hit theaters until Sept. 9, but you can catch the full trailer above.

Keep Bread Fresh (Practically) Forever With This Trick

14:19 0 Comments

Few things are sadder than tossing out a stale half-loaf of beautiful artisanal (or homemade) bread. The problem: said beautiful bread lacks the stabilizers present in commercial presliced loaves, and so it goes from rocking your world to rock-hard ridiculously fast. The solution: eat more bread a simple trick involving your freezer.

Here's what you should do:

  1. Within 24 hours (maximum) of cutting into a loaf, slice up the remaining bread. (Don't wait until it's already turned the corner; at that point, your best bet is giving leftovers a second life as croutons, breadcrumbs, or bread pudding.) Don't just stick the bread in the freezer unsliced. Unless your kitchen is equipped with a buzz saw, there's no chance you're going to be able to slice it without thawing the entire loaf first (trust us, we've tried).
  2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment or wax paper, arrange the slices in one layer on top of that, and put it in the freezer, uncovered, until frozen solid. (The parchment will prevent the gorgeous, moist crumb of the bread from sticking to the pan, and the single layer will prevent the slices from freezing stuck to each other.)
  3. Once the bread slices are frozen, transfer them to a resealable freezer bag, removing as much air from the bag as possible.
  4. When a bread craving hits, take out just as many slices of bread as you'll eat then, and either let them thaw at room temperature, or put them directly in the toaster (they'll take about one extra minute to toast). The texture of the bread will be about 95 percent as good as fresh bread and far better than second-day, already-starting-to-go-stale bread. Stored frozen (in a resealable freezer bag), sliced bread will stay fresh and delicious for at least six months, if not longer.

Iggy Azalea Accuses Nick Young of Cheating on Her: "He Had Brought Other Women Into Our Home"

14:19 0 Comments

Iggy Azalea and Nick Young's breakup keeps getting messier. The "Team" rapper announced the end of their one-year engagement earlier this month with a heartfelt statement on Instagram, writing that she was unable to rebuild her trust in Nick but still wished him the best. "It's never easy to part ways with the person you planned you're entire future with," she explained. "But futures can be rewritten and as of today mine is a blank page." Sadly, it seems their split wasn't as amicable as it initially seemed. Amid rumors that Nick has gotten his ex-girlfriend Keonna Green pregnant again (the former couple share 4-year-old son Nick Jr.), Iggy posted two tweets that claim she caught him cheating on her after looking at home security footage.

The Lakers player has yet to respond to Iggy's most recent allegations, and the only statement he's made about their breakup so far was when he tweeted "Single" following the news. Here's hoping they can find a way to keep things civil.

1. The bitchin' weather LA is currently having.

5. Ben's Deflategate rant.

Every Girl Has This Summer Dress, But Michelle Obama's Is Most Sophisticated

13:56 0 Comments

A typical white shirtdress, lightweight in fabric and casual in structure, is a Summer staple. Wear it with wedges for a fancy dinner or pair it with sneakers and a crossbody bag to run errands. Michelle Obama's Delpozo number, however, has a few add-ons that make it stand out. The FLOTUS put her new outfit on display in Madrid, Spain, where she hosted a Let Girls Learn conference alongside Queen Letizia. The duo took a stroll through the garden, showing off their sundresses from every angle.

That's when we noticed the breezy panel on the back of Michelle's textured design and the two lovely bows at her waist (they complemented the shape of her drop earrings). Michelle played up her signature Summer style in open-toe metallic sandals, elevating her look and giving us every last reason to shop for a shirtdress with details like this one, even if we already have the standard version hanging in our closet.

Don't Praise Me For Being A Dad Who Gets Up At Night For My Baby

13:09 0 Comments

This dad learned the importance of parenting equally and not expecting congratulations when doing so. Our friends at YourTango have shared his story.

I'd placed myself on a pedestal for doing something as simple as helping my wife with our baby.

I was chatting with my wife about the long night we'd had getting up with the baby, when I said, "At least I get up with her. A lot of men don't. You should be grateful." I was tired. And I said it like she was really lucky to have me. Like I was going above and beyond as a father.

It was just after 7 AM. Mel paused for a moment, leaned back in the chair, Aspen sleeping in her lap. Her eyes were a little red and her brown hair was in a loose ponytail. She held the baby a little closer, and took in what I had said. I expected her to agree with me.

We sometimes talked about the fathers we knew who didn't get up with their babies. They viewed it as the mother's job. But she didn't. Instead, Mel crossed her legs, looked me in the eyes, and said, "I wish you would stop saying that."

At the time, Mel was a nearly full-time college student, a mother of three, and a school volunteer (a requirement of our children's charter school). She spent hours sitting at our kitchen table, hunched over a keyboard, a textbook to her right, and at least one child tugging at her pant leg.

And despite her commitment to education, and how much I pitched in, she often commented on the pressure she felt to keep a clean house - not to mention take the children to the doctor, cook meals, shuttle the kids to sports and other extracurricular activities, keep them looking clean and healthy, and monitor their behavior in public.

She was a student and a mother, and yet she felt an enormous pressure to be the sole caregiver of our children. And there I was, feeding into those expectations by mentioning my help in the night as if it were some generous extension of my role as a father.

Naturally, I didn't think about any of this at the time. What I said was my way of trying to get her to notice my contribution to our marriage. As a father, I often feel like I'm really breaking the mold because I do pitch in around the house. If I'm home from work, I'm cleaning; I get up in the night and do numerous other things to help make our marriage a partnership. But for some reason I felt like I should receive special attention for doing things that have been, for so many years, seen as the mother's job.

I was dressed in slacks and a collared shirt. In my right hand was a purple bag with my lunch. I paused for a moment, took a step back, and said, "Why? I mean, it's true. I do a lot of stuff that other fathers don't. I'm a good guy."

Mel was standing now, the baby in her arms. Our older two children were still sleeping, so we were speaking in whispers.

"Because it doesn't make me feel like we're in a partnership. It makes me feel like you want me to kiss your butt every time you get up in the night. This is your baby, too."

We went back and forth for a while. She told me how she appreciated all that I do to help around the house but she hated the way I acted like I was doing something really great, when in fact I was just doing what a father should.

My knee-jerk reaction was to get pissed off. I wanted to give her a list of other fathers we knew, family and friends, who still subscribed to antiquated notions of gender roles. I went to open my mouth, but stopped for just a moment, thought about my feelings, and realized it was best to leave before I said something I shouldn't.

So I left for work without saying a word. I drove to work angry.

I was 20 minutes into my 30-minute commute when I thought about the last time I had washed dishes. I'd assumed that I should be getting praise or a reward, and for the first time I asked myself, Why? I ate there, too. Then I thought about vacuuming the carpet, or doing the laundry, realized I had the same expectations about those chores, and suddenly I felt like a jerk.

The understanding that Mel was responsible for home and child care was so deeply ingrained in my understanding of family and contribution that I'd placed myself on a pedestal for doing something as simple as helping my wife with our baby in the night.

By the time I parked and walked to my office, I felt really low. I called Mel from work, and told her I was sorry.

"You're right," I said. "This is a partnership, and I shouldn't act like I'm doing some amazing thing because I get up in the night. I'm going to stop."

Mel was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "Thank you."

This Insane Watermelon Skinning Trick Will Make Your Jaw Drop

We all know how to cut watermelon into cubes and slices, but how many times have your guests really been impressed with those shapes? One former NASA engineer, Mark Rober, figured out the coolest party trick that presents the fruit in a way you'd never imagine.

Rober takes two watermelons close in size - the first he skins completely by removing outer slices with a knife, then smooths its surface out with a dish scrub. The second watermelon is cut into two equal halves and then gutted entirely. Place the skinned watermelon into the empty vessel, and you've got yourself a twist-apart melon.

Photographic Evidence That Jennifer Lopez Has Not Aged a Day

12:54 0 Comments

If our lives depended on arranging photos of Jennifer Lopez in chronological order, we would fail. Though her style and hair color have certainly evolved through the years, her face and overall beauty have not changed - and we're starting to need more than her usual "sleep is very important" answer here. Perhaps we should also consult Thalia, while we're at it.

The sexy multihyphenate has long attracted theories that she's aging in reverse - or, you know, some sort of immortal vampire - so to further explore that argument, we've rounded up photos of her over the last few decades. The results are pretty telling, if we do say so ourselves.

26 Perks of Being in a Serious Relationship in Your 20s

14:20 0 Comments

Young, independent, and . . . committed? Yep, you heard that right. This is a declaration for anyone who's in a long-term relationship in their 20s and has felt pressure to "see what else is out there." Some people think that being in a relationship in your 20s makes no sense at all. They assume you're wasting away your youth; however, I couldn't disagree more.

I've been with my boyfriend for almost three years. Since we've been together, I've studied abroad, lived alone, and still go out and have fun with my girlfriends. As a couple, we've traveled around Southeast Asia, gone to music festivals, and lived life like every other 20-something - we just happen to be in a relationship. I have a sense of stability that allows me to focus on my career rather than wasting energy worrying about if that guy will text me back or if I'll ever fall in love.

Some of the most self-sufficient and motivated women I know happen to be in committed relationships as well. I asked them to share all the reasons they love having a significant other and compiled a list of perks below:

  1. You can still experience the fun that a single person has (like studying abroad and going out with friends) while getting the benefits of a long-term significant other.
  2. You've already found what most people spend their whole lives searching for - someone who truly understands you.
  3. You have someone who knows and loves you during a time when you're constantly learning and growing.
  4. The laughter is deeper, the sex is better, and the affection is stronger in a committed relationship compared to a casual fling.
  5. You're constantly reassured of your talents and aspirations. It's like having a personal 24/7 cheerleader.
  6. Your family won't constantly bug you to see if you're dating anyone - they already know and love him.
  7. From an early age (relatively speaking), you learn about what's really important to you in a partner and what it takes to work toward a successful relationship.
  8. Being able to fully trust someone is so important when trying to figure out your life.
  9. At the end of the day, there will always be someone waiting for you.
  10. While friends are telling you about all the immature guys they meet on Tinder or at bars, you don't have to deal with jerks on a weekly basis.
  11. Monogamy equals reduced risk of STDs.
  12. You have someone who reminds you every day how much they love every part of you.
  13. You teach each other new things, adventure together, and tackle challenges together.
  14. You can increase the status of your relationship slowly, without the pressure to jump into marriage that can come later in life.
  15. It's nice to know someone is always looking out for you, there to drunkenly dance with you, and make sure you get home safely.
  16. You have a confidante, best friend, and lover, all wrapped into one.
  17. You have someone to take to your awkward family gatherings.
  18. Even when you're without makeup and wearing sweats, he makes you feel beautiful.
  19. You don't have to juggle dating and your career. You have more time to focus on your professional goals and ambitions.
  20. Whether you marry or not, you've had way more practice being in a serious relationship than someone who only dated around until their late 20s.
  21. Doing the most mundane things like going grocery shopping or heating up leftovers becomes instantly more fun with a partner by your side.
  22. You have a support system during those years after college when close friends might be superbusy or spread all across the country.
  23. You can stay in without feeling the pressure to go out. But on the nights you do go out, you don't have to fake nice to the drunken guys at the bar because he's there. It's a win-win situation!
  24. You help recognize each other's flaws and push each another to become a better person.
  25. When your single friends complain that they can't find a normal, nice guy and wish they had someone like your guy, you feel lucky to have found someone so wonderful.
  26. You can be yourself at all times, to be good and to be not so good, and to have someone every step of the way encourage you, laugh with you, reassure you, challenge you - in a word, love you.
